Simply put, air stones for aquariums add oxygen to the water and assist in circulating water around your tank. They are inexpensive and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. When attached to an air pump, they produce tiny bubbles which rise to the surface of your aquarium.
The job of a fish tank air stone is to release tiny bubbles to gradually diffuse air into the aquarium. Air stones also minimise the noise of the air bubbles. Without an air stone, the air tubing will usually float to the surface of the tank. The bubbles coming out of the air tubing can also be quite large and very loud.
For an air stone to expel bubbles, it needs to be connected to an air pump via some airline. Aquarium air stone setup is easy. Simply affix the air stone to the air tube attached to the air pump. Keep in mind, longer air stones need larger capacity air pumps to operate. You may also need a check valve in between to stop water backflow in the event of a power failure.
It’s a personal preference on where aquarium air stones are placed. They are weighted so they won't float. It is best to place the air stone where there is the least amount of water flow and away from filter intake pipes. This is because bubbles rising up into the intake pipes can cause the filters to stop working.
We like to bury air stones in the gravel, under an aquarium ornament or rock, or you can leave them in the corner of the tank. It’s completely up to you where you’d like to place the air stone.
If you have a fish tank air pump, you will typically need an air stone unless you are using the air pump to connect to an internal sponge filter or air-operated aquarium ornament.
Not all tanks will require an external source of bubbles. Air stones are usually not used in planted tanks because as bubbles dissolve and break down, they reduce the carbon dioxide in the water which is necessary for plant growth. Aquarium plants will produce oxygen for your fish.
Replace air stones when they start to break down, get covered in algae, or when the bubbles are not coming out evenly throughout the air stone. This will typically occur every couple of years.
