No matter what type of aquarium you have, making sure that your tank is properly aerated and circulated is crucial in making sure your fish and plants will thrive. As an aquarium hobbyist, your main goal is to create and maintain a healthy environment for your tank inhabitants. In order to achieve this, you need to have the right aquarium water pump. Here at Aquarium Kingdom, we offer various aquarium water pumps and powerhead pumps perfect for all types of tanks.
An aquarium water pump or fish tank powerhead is used to circulate the water to prevent dead spots in your aquarium. The flow created by the powerhead pushes the water around your tank so debris can be picked up by your filter instead of settling at the bottom of your tank. This water circulation and agitation can also help with aerating the aquarium.
Submersible water pumps can also be used to pump water from the sump back up into the aquarium, move water through your filter system or even to pump out water from the tank for faster water changes.
When shopping for a water pump or an aquarium powerhead, you will see the term flow rate is used a lot. The flow rate is measured in LPH (litres per hour). This is the volume of water pumped through the powerhead per hour. The higher the flow rate, the stronger the powerhead.
Some factors you need to consider when choosing a pump.
The size of your tank will determine the powerhead you should buy. There are many powerhead pumps available that offer different flow rates. For example, a large aquarium will require a strong powerhead with a high flow rate.
The size of the fish. Smaller fish need slower moving water but larger fish can handle stronger flow rates.
The volume of water needed to be pumped into the filter. As a general rule we recommend a flow rate of 4-6 times the water volume of your tank.
If you are pumping water up from a sump back up into the aquarium you need to consider the height at which the water flows against gravity back up into the aquarium. This dramatically reduces the flow rate of the water pump. Please check the pumps max head heights to make sure the pump has enough pressure to push the water back up into the tank.
Some filters or tanks have specific pump requirements or only fit a particular aquarium because of the way it is mounted. For example the Aqua One Aquariums have specific sized Aqua One powerheads that are used to mount onto their filter systems.
